Now this is important: you need to pick lessons from someone who is an experienced teacher and not just an experienced guitarist. When I was a kid I learnt guitar from an excellent guitarist, at least I thought he was good, but looking back I realize he was not such a great teacher.

It took more than two years before I could really call myself a reasonable guitar player. As a guitar teacher now myself, I figure it could have been done in one year.

That's exactly why you need to be careful choosing beginner online guitar lessons. Any competent guitarist can give lessons, but playing the guitar and teaching the guitar are two different things. That's why you need to choose lessons from a guitarist with a long and proven record of teaching.

You need to check that the lessons are clear and simple, and that there are plenty of videos so you can actually see what the teacher's fingers are doing. They also need to teach you tunes, not just give you practice exercises. You need to be playing songs just as soon as possible to make the learning more fun. That will keep you going when the going gets tough.

There need to be jam tracks, so you can play along with a real band and be making real music. Believe me, it's a great experience. It's hard work learning the guitar, but playing songs fairly early on in the training helps with the battle between you, your fingers and the greatest musical instrument in the world.

Online guitar lessons are, in my view, better than having a personal teacher. You can see clearly what needs to be done, you can replay lessons again and again, and you can take lessons just as often as you like. That sure beats traveling to guitar lessons once or twice a week, and the cost is far, far less.
